Return on Reno is free to use. To keep it that way, the site earns money in a few transparent ways. Here it is in plain English.
Affiliate links
Some links are affiliate links. If you click one and buy or sign up, we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. Your price is the same whether you use our link or go direct.
Lead referrals
Some links connect you with local contractors or providers (e.g. quote-request forms). If you request a quote through one, we may receive a referral fee. You're never obligated to use them, and it costs you nothing.
Display advertising
We display ads from third-party networks. These networks and their partners may use cookies to show relevant ads — see our privacy policy for details and choices.
What types of products and services we link to
Affiliate links on Return on Reno typically fall into a few categories:
- Planning tools and templates. Budget spreadsheets, project-management tools, and renovation planners — products that help you organise a renovation.
- Contractor matching services. Platforms that connect homeowners with vetted local contractors for quotes. We link to these when they offer a genuinely useful shortcut to getting competitive pricing.
- Home improvement retailers. Occasionally we link to specific products — flooring, fixtures, materials — when they are relevant to a guide or cost breakdown.
We do not accept payment to feature a product in our calculator data, cost guides, or ROI estimates. Affiliate relationships are limited to clearly marked recommendations and contextual links, never embedded in the numbers themselves.
How to tell an affiliate link from a regular link
Most affiliate links on this site point to external domains and open in a new tab. Internal links — to our own calculator, guides, and tools — are never affiliate links. If you are ever unsure whether a link is an affiliate link, you can hover over it and check the URL: affiliate links typically include a tracking parameter or pass through a referral domain. When in doubt, you can always navigate to the product or service directly — our recommendations do not change based on how you arrive there.
Our promise on independence
Our cost estimates and ROI figures are never influenced by advertisers or affiliate partners. We don't inflate a project's return because a partner benefits, and we don't recommend a service simply because it pays. When we point you toward something, it's because we think it's genuinely useful.
The editorial and data side of Return on Reno operates independently from the commercial side. Darren reviews every guide and cost page for accuracy before publication — the same process applies regardless of whether the page contains affiliate links. If a product or service does not meet our bar for usefulness, we do not link to it, even if a partnership is available. You can read more about our editorial standards on the About page.
