EV charger installation cost: what to budget in 2026

Adding a home EV charger is one of the fastest-growing renovation line items in 2026. With EV adoption accelerating across the US, Australia and New Zealand, buyers increasingly expect — or at least appreciate — a dedicated charging setup. The good news: it is one of the more affordable electrical upgrades you can make, and in the right market it adds measurable resale value.

The short answer: a Level 2 (240V) home EV charger costs roughly $1,200–$2,500 fully installed, depending on your panel capacity, circuit run distance, and charger brand. The charger unit itself runs $300–$700; the rest is electrical labour.

What you are actually paying for

The charger hardware is the smaller part of the bill. Most of the cost is electrical work: running a dedicated 240V / 40–50A circuit from your panel to the garage or driveway, plus any panel upgrades needed to support the additional load. If your panel is already near capacity — common in older homes — you may need a sub-panel or a full panel upgrade, which can add $1,500–$3,000 to the project.

Here is how the costs typically break down:

The single biggest variable is the distance from your electrical panel to the charging location. A garage with the panel on the opposite wall is the cheapest scenario; running conduit 50+ feet to an outdoor parking spot or detached garage pushes costs toward the top of the range.

Level 1 vs Level 2 vs Level 3

Most homeowners install a Level 2 charger, which delivers roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour of charging — enough to fully charge an average EV overnight. Level 1 charging (a standard 120V outlet) is free if you already have an outlet in the garage, but it only adds about 4–5 miles per hour, making it impractical as a primary charger for most drivers. Level 3 (DC fast charging) is commercial-grade and not installed residentially.

If you are on a tight budget and drive fewer than 30–40 miles a day, a Level 1 setup costs nothing beyond the cord that comes with the car. But for resale value and practical daily use, Level 2 is the standard buyers expect.

Does an EV charger add resale value?

This is where it gets interesting as a renovation investment. An installed Level 2 charger does not dramatically increase your home’s appraised value the way a kitchen remodel does, but it removes a friction point for a growing segment of buyers. In markets with high EV adoption — California, the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, and much of coastal Australia — a home without a charger is increasingly seen as requiring an immediate post-purchase upgrade. In those markets, the charger effectively pays for itself by avoiding a price reduction or buyer hesitation.

Industry surveys suggest a home EV charger adds roughly $5,000–$15,000 of perceived value in EV-heavy markets, though the actual appraised uplift is harder to pin down because appraisers have not yet standardised how they value charging infrastructure. At a $1,500–$2,500 installed cost, even a conservative estimate of the value-add makes this one of the higher-ROI electrical upgrades available.

In markets where EV adoption is still low, the value-add is minimal — but the cost is also low enough that it is unlikely to be a negative. Unlike a pool in a cold climate, an EV charger does not add ongoing maintenance costs or liability concerns.

Rebates and incentives

Federal, state and local incentives can significantly reduce the net cost. In the US, the federal tax credit for EV charger installation (under the Inflation Reduction Act) covers 30% of the cost up to $1,000 for residential installations in eligible census tracts. Many states and utilities stack additional rebates on top — some covering 50–100% of the hardware cost. In Australia, several state governments offer rebates for home charger installation as part of their EV strategies.

Check your local utility and state energy office before committing — the rebate landscape changes frequently, and the effective out-of-pocket cost after incentives can drop to under $500 in some areas.

What to watch out for

How it compares to other electrical upgrades

An EV charger sits in a sweet spot: lower cost than a full panel upgrade or a solar panel installation, but with a clearer buyer-facing benefit than rewiring or adding circuits for general use. If you are already planning electrical work — a panel upgrade, adding circuits for a workshop or hot tub — bundling the EV charger circuit into the same project saves on labour because the electrician is already on site.

Should you install one?

If you drive an EV or plan to buy one, a Level 2 home charger is one of the most practical upgrades you can make — it pays for itself in convenience within months compared to relying on public charging. As a pure resale play, it makes the most sense in high-EV-adoption markets where buyers expect it, and the cost is low enough that the downside risk is negligible even in markets where EV adoption is still early. At $1,200–$2,500 installed (often less after rebates), it is one of the cheapest ways to future-proof your home for a market that is clearly moving toward electrification.
